Why is the IRCC photo 420 by 540 pixels?

420 by 540 is exactly the 7:9 ratio of a 35 mm by 45 mm photo, the international ICAO format. It is a minimum rather than a target, so upload something considerably larger within the 4 MB limit. A file at the bare minimum resolution will look soft once IRCC prints it onto a document.

Is the IRCC photo the same as a Canadian passport photo?

No, and this trips people up. The passport format is a 50 mm by 70 mm print, a 5:7 rectangle. The IRCC digital format is a 7:9 frame defined in pixels. The head height rule is identical at 31-36 mm, but the frame proportions differ, so you cannot simply reuse the file.

Can I retouch or filter an IRCC photo?

No, and this is more serious than it sounds. IRCC treats an edited or beautified photo as a potential misrepresentation, which carries far heavier consequences than a rejected photo. Cropping, resizing and replacing a background are acceptable; changing your appearance is not.

Which applications use the IRCC digital photo?

Applications submitted through the IRCC online portal, including permanent residence, study permits, work permits, visitor visas and citizenship. Paper applications and passport applications use printed photos in the 50x70 mm format instead.

Do I need a photographer's details for a digital photo?

No. The requirement to write the photographer's name, address and date applies to printed photos submitted with paper applications. Digital uploads do not carry that information, though the photo must still be recent.

What is the difference between a digital and a printed passport photo?

A printed photo is defined in millimetres and needs a correct DPI so it physically measures the right size on paper. A digital photo is defined in pixels and file size, because a portal validates the file rather than a print. Why does my photo get rejected for being too large or too small?

Government portals enforce both pixel dimensions and file size in kilobytes, and the two limits fight each other: a photo big enough in pixels is often too heavy in kilobytes. The frame keeps the 7:9 ratio of a 35 mm x 45 mm photo, so the same file works for printing.

Two IRCC specifications, not one

IRCC publishes separate rules for printed photos and digital photos, and confusing them is one of the easiest ways to delay an application. Printed photos are defined in millimetres and must be 50 mm by 70 mm. Digital photos are defined in pixels and kilobytes, with a floor of 420 by 540 pixels and a ceiling of 4 MB. The face geometry is the same in both, but the frame shape and export settings are not.

The 31 to 36 mm rule still applies

Even though a digital file has no physical size, IRCC still expresses the head height in millimetres, measured at the equivalent print scale. This preset renders the frame at 600 DPI so the millimetre measurement stays meaningful, then reports the figure to you directly. Anything outside 31 to 36 mm is flagged before you download.

Give yourself room in the file size budget

4 MB sounds generous, but a full-resolution phone photo can exceed it. Rather than asking you to guess a compression setting, the exporter searches for the highest JPEG quality that fits inside the limit. If a portal ever rejects the file for being too large, you can also run it through the image compressor.

Reflections hide the eyes. Most countries want glasses removed entirely.

Head tilted

The head must be square to the camera. Use the straighten slider to correct small tilts.
