Why does USCIS require photos taken within 30 days?

USCIS applies a much shorter recency window than the passport agency, which allows six months. The intent is that the photo reflects your appearance at the moment of filing. Practically, it means you should take the photo as part of assembling the application rather than reusing an older one.

Which USCIS forms need photos?

Commonly I-485 for adjustment of status, N-400 for naturalisation, I-765 for employment authorisation, I-131 for travel documents, and I-90 for green card replacement. Check the specific form instructions, since the number of copies varies.

Should I write on the back of a USCIS photo?

When the form instructions ask for it, lightly print your name and A-number in pencil or with a felt pen on the back of each photo. Write gently so you do not emboss or dent the image on the front.

Can I wear glasses in a USCIS photo?

No. USCIS follows the State Department rule, so glasses must be removed unless you have a documented medical reason with a signed statement. Contact lenses are fine as long as they do not change your eye colour.

The 30-day rule is the one to watch

Everything about the USCIS photo matches the US passport specification except the timing. Passport photos may be up to six months old; USCIS wants photos taken within 30 days of filing. Applicants who prepared a photo early in a long process routinely fall foul of this, and a rejected photo on an I-485 or N-400 can add weeks to a case.

Two copies per form, usually

Most photo-bearing USCIS forms ask for two identical colour photos, but the count varies and the instructions are authoritative. Downloading a print sheet gives you several spares at no extra cost, which is worth doing because a request for evidence over a photo is a slow way to lose time.

Writing on the back

Where the instructions ask for it, print your name and A-number lightly on the back of each photo. Use a pencil or a soft felt pen and avoid pressing hard, since an indentation shows through on the printed side and can render the photo unusable.

Filing several forms at once

Concurrent filings, such as an I-485 with an I-765 and an I-131, each carry their own photo requirement. Rather than taking a separate photo for each, take one compliant photo and print enough copies from a single sheet. The 30-day window applies to when the photo was taken, not when it was printed.

A side light or overhead lamp leaves one side of the face dark. Face a window instead.

Glasses causing glare

Reflections hide the eyes. Most countries want glasses removed entirely.

Head tilted

The head must be square to the camera. Use the straighten slider to correct small tilts.

Head too large

The crown is cut off and the head exceeds the allowed millimetre range.
