Question 1

Is my photo safe? Do you store my images?

Accepted Answer

Your photo never leaves your device. Cropping, face measurement and background replacement all run inside your browser tab using your own hardware, so there is no upload, no server copy and nothing for us to store or delete. You can confirm it yourself: open your browser's network tab while you edit and you will see no image being sent.

Question 2

Is it really free?

Accepted Answer

Yes, with no watermark, no account and no download limit. Before you download, we ask for an email so we can unlock the file. Your photo still never leaves your device. GetNorthPath Passport Photo is part of GetNorthPath's free DIY immigration toolkit. If you later want help using other GetNorthPath tools, you can book a free product walkthrough. There is no paid photo tier.

Question 3

Can I use this photo for my official application?

Accepted Answer

The output matches the published dimensions, head height and background rules for the format you pick, and we show you the exact measurement in millimetres so you can verify it. That said, the accepting officer has the final say, and specifications do change. We link to the official source on every format page so you can confirm the current rules before submitting.

Question 4

What photo sizes and countries are supported?

Accepted Answer

54 countries, 62 document formats, including Canada 50x70 mm, the US 2x2 inch square, the 35x45 mm ICAO standard used across Europe and Asia, China 33x48 mm, Malaysia 35x50 mm and Bangladesh 45x55 mm. Passport, visa, citizenship, PR card and IRCC digital formats are each handled separately because their rules differ.

Question 5

What image formats can I upload?

Accepted Answer

JPG, PNG and WEBP all work, and most modern browsers also handle HEIC files straight from an iPhone. Files up to 25 MB are accepted. EXIF rotation is applied automatically, so photos taken sideways on a phone will not come out rotated.

Question 6

What is the print sheet option?

Accepted Answer

It tiles your finished photo across a standard paper size with dashed cut guides, so you can print at a pharmacy kiosk, a photo lab or at home and cut out several identical copies. You can choose a 4x6 inch print, 5x7 inch print, A4 or US Letter, and we tell you how many copies fit before you download.

Question 7

Why do passport photos get rejected?

Accepted Answer

In practice it is almost always one of six things: the head is the wrong size in the frame, the background is not plain or is the wrong shade, there is a shadow on the face or behind the head, the photo is too dark or too bright (IRCC calls this a clarity issue), the expression is not neutral, or glasses cause glare. Head size is the single biggest cause, and it is the one thing a phone camera cannot tell you. This tool measures it for you in millimetres and flags uneven lighting and exposure before you download.

Question 8

Do I need a professional camera?

Accepted Answer

No. A modern phone camera in even daylight is more than enough. What matters far more than the camera is the lighting and the distance: face a window, avoid overhead lights that cast shadows under your eyes, and have someone take the photo from about two metres away rather than at arm's length, which distorts your features.

Question 9

Can I make a passport photo at home?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and for most countries a home photo is perfectly acceptable as long as it meets the specification. Stand about half a metre in front of a plain, evenly lit wall, face a window for soft front lighting, keep a neutral expression with your mouth closed, and look straight at the lens. Upload the result here and the crop, head height and background are handled for you.

Question 10

Does the printed photo come out the right physical size?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Canvas exports normally carry no physical size information, which is why photos printed from other web tools often come out slightly wrong. We write a real DPI value into the JPEG file itself, so 50x70 mm prints as 50x70 mm rather than being scaled by the printer.

Question 11

What do reviewers actually measure on a passport photo?

Accepted Answer

Outer size, chin-to-crown head height (hair included), whether the head is centred and level, background shade, expression, glasses, and how recent the photo is. Head height causes more refusals than anything else because it cannot be judged by eye.

Question 12

Is a white background always correct?

Accepted Answer

No. Canada and the United States want plain white or off-white. The UK wants light grey or cream, and Germany wants light grey. A white photo sent to a country that requires grey can be refused on background alone.

Question 13

Can I wear glasses or a head covering?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the issuing authority. The US has not accepted glasses since 2016, except for a documented medical reason. Canada allows glasses if the eyes are clear, with no glare or tint. Head coverings worn for religious reasons are usually allowed when the face from chin to forehead stays visible. Check the country page for that document.

Question 14

How recent does the photo have to be?

Accepted Answer

Most passport authorities want a photo taken within the last six months, and it must look like you now. A haircut, new glasses, or a change in facial hair is enough for a photo to be treated as out of date.

Question 15

Do babies follow the same expression rules?

Accepted Answer

No. Canada, the US and the UK relax the neutral-expression rule for infants. The eyes should be open where possible, the face unobstructed, and nobody else in the frame. The size and background rules still apply.

Question 16

What is the difference between a digital and a printed passport photo?

Accepted Answer

A printed photo is defined in millimetres and needs a correct DPI so it physically measures the right size on paper. A digital photo is defined in pixels and file size, because a portal validates the file rather than a print. The same face crop can serve both, but the export settings differ, which is why this tool offers a print and a digital preset.

Question 17

Why does my photo get rejected for being too large or too small?

Accepted Answer

Government portals enforce both pixel dimensions and file size in kilobytes, and the two limits fight each other: a photo big enough in pixels is often too heavy in kilobytes. We solve this by binary-searching the JPEG quality until the file lands inside the allowed range while keeping the required pixel dimensions.

Question 18

What DPI should a passport photo be?

Accepted Answer

300 DPI is the practical standard for printing and is what we use by default. Some authorities ask for 600 DPI for digital submissions, which is why the IRCC preset here renders at 600. Below 300 DPI a printed photo starts to look soft and can be refused for poor quality.

Question 19

Does a baby need a neutral expression?

Accepted Answer

No. Most authorities, including Canada, the US and the UK, relax the expression rule for infants. A baby's mouth may be open and they do not need to look neutral. What still applies is that the eyes should be open where possible, the face must be unobstructed, and no one else may appear in the frame.

Question 20

How do I get a plain background behind a baby?

Accepted Answer

Lay the baby on a plain white sheet and photograph from directly above, which is the easiest method by far. Make sure the light is even so the sheet does not cast a shadow or fold. If the sheet is wrinkled or slightly off-colour, turn on background replacement here and it will be swapped for a clean, compliant backdrop.

Question 21

Can I hold my baby in the photo?

Accepted Answer

Your hands or body must not be visible in the final crop. A common trick is to support the baby's head with a white towel rather than your hand. If a hand does appear at the edge, adjust the crop position here until it is out of frame.

Question 22

Do babies need to look straight at the camera?

Accepted Answer

The gaze rule is applied loosely for very young infants, but the face must be facing forward rather than turned to one side. For newborns who cannot hold their head steady, photograph from above while they are lying down so the face is square to the lens.
