The economics, honestly
Photo sites charge because server-side image processing costs money. Every upload consumes bandwidth, CPU and storage, so a free user is a real expense and a watermark is the natural way to convert them.
We moved the processing into your browser instead. Face detection, segmentation, cropping and encoding all run on your hardware, which means our cost per photo is essentially the bandwidth of the page itself. There is no upload to pay for and no image storage to maintain. Free is not a loss leader here, it is just what the architecture costs.
That architecture also happens to be the honest answer to the privacy question. We are not promising to delete your photo; we never receive it.
Why GetNorthPath pays for it
We help people move to Canada. A photo that fails is one of the most common and most avoidable reasons an application is delayed, and it is a miserable experience: you wait weeks, then get the package returned over a 3 mm measurement nobody told you about.
Building the tool that prevents that is useful whether or not you ever become a customer. Some people who use it will need help with the rest of the application, and that is where we charge. Most will not, and that is fine.
